Community service

QE2 Activity Centre is very much part of the local community - even if we are hidden in the wild woods of Manor Farm Country Park!  A couple of weeks age we hosted a get-together of people who lived here in the woods after the Second World War.  These folk, ranging in age from their 60s to their 90s, had lived in the Nissen huts that had been vacated by the army in 1946.  It was great to hear their memories of those days, in particular to hear the phrase again and again "our parents always said they were the best days of their lives".

Last week and this week we have had locally based businesses coming in to help us.  Last week a team from Southampton Airport came along and painted the outside of the T
eam Q base and the staff room and did loads of gardening.  Thanks you guys it all looks great!

Today employees of Zurich Insurance broker business team descended on the QE2 Activity Centre.  They came from all over the country, from Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Reading, Portsmouth and Whitely.

They were brought together for a couple of days of volunteering; team building while doing something useful!  By the end of their first day they had cleared a patch of ground, built two raised beds and a retaining wall for our mulch pile.

A big thank you to Steph, Michelle, Linda, Penny, Jo, Andy H, Ray, Rupert, Ian, Chris, Grant, James and Andy D.  See you in the morning to complete the job.

Saturday clubs at QE2 Activity Centre

Here's the timetable for QE2 Activity Centre's two Saturday activity clubs for children.  Both take place on alternate Saturdays throughout the year,  one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

In the morning we have the Sportsability Club for children with disabilities.  This club is run by parents, offering an active sports club for children with additional needs and their siblings. There's an upper age limit of 16.  Parents, carers or buddies need stay on site. The club meets fortnightly on Saturday mornings between 10:00 and 12:00. Each session includes regular Sports Club activities including ropes course, table tennis, badminton and skittles.  QE2 Activity Centre staff will be involved for some sessions (details below), providing activities including climbing, archery, canoe, motorboat and zipwire.

The afternoon club is run in conjunction with Fareham Autism Spectrum Support and is called Adventurers.  This club meets on alternate Saturday afternoons between 1:00 and 4:00 and is aimed at young people (up to the age of 25) who have autism spectrum condition.  Again siblings are welcome and parents, carers or buddies need to stay on site.  There's sports and activities as well as arts and crafts plus QE2 Activity Centre staff are there each month to provide additional activities including canoeing, climbing and bushcraft.
